ABOUT ENTANGLING

“Love life first, then march through the gates of each season; go inside nature and develop the discipline to stop destructive behaviour; learn tenderness toward experience, then make decisions based on creating biological wealth that includes all people, animals, cultures, currencies, languages, and the living things as yet undiscovered; listen to the truth the land will tell you; act accordingly.”

Gretel Ehrlich, The Future of Ice: A Journey Into Cold

Entangling is a project that connects many narratives, from my childhood, from the world around us, from the past, present and future. This book is a visual contemplation on human existence in relation to the shifting flux of our natural environment. It observes our fluid relationship with nature and our existence in the Anthropocene presenting a momentary view into the palimpsest of our experiences and actions. Entangling is the culmination of over three years of research and development. Much of my work is based on field trips as well as recording the everyday. I collect memories of places through the experience of being in a location - the air, the sound, textures and smells. On site drawings and photographs contribute to a much broader experience of that environment which can then be authentically translated into imagery.

Entangling considers the micro and macro narratives associated with environmental damage. The interplay between macro and micro has fed directly into the imagery where land mass and microscopic forms can be read as both.  Lichen, a seemingly fragile organism, which flourishes in even the harshest conditions, can evoke alternative readings - islands, icebergs, cities at night, movement of people, populations. Entangling echoes this idea of changing nature through behaviour, something beautiful into something ugly, destruction through behaviour and habit
